Lose Weight and Live Healthier with Bariatric Surgery

Eliminate what's weighing you down By Azra Shuib | July 2nd, 2021 Obese people who cannot achieve weight loss even after exercise and diet may feel devastated with their condition. A lot of people may have had success, only to regain the excess weight in the future. Adding on to the body image issues, obese people are also at higher risks of getting serious diseases. Hence, an intervention that is more effective than a good diet and exercise is needed. For severely obese people, weight loss surgeries can be beneficial in the long term. Not only can these surgeries help in losing weight, they also reduce the risks of conditions like diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, arthritis, and acid reflux. Bariatric Surgery Bariatric surgery is a weight-loss surgical procedure that employs particular methods to help reduce the amount of food intake a person can digest. Changes to the digestive system combined with a proper diet can lead to rapid weight loss. Typically, Bariatric Surgery is performed when diet and exercise have not been effective or if a patient has serious health problems caused by being overweight. After the surgery, the patient must follow the provided diet guideline with a dedication to see improvements. Some types of Bariatric Surgery include: Sleeve Gastrectomy In this procedure, a part of the stomach is removed and the remaining section is formed into a tubelike structure. Since the size of the stomach has become smaller, it will not hold as much food and the production of the appetite-regulating hormone ghrelin will also lessen. Gastric Bypass Surgery Gastric Bypass includes changes to the stomach and small intestine, which will also change the way food is digested. After the surgery, the stomach will become smaller. This aids weight loss by restricting the amount of food the stomach holds, limiting the number of calories and nutrients the system absorbs and changing the gut hormones that can help patients to feel full longer and reverse obesity-caused metabolic syndrome. Gastric Band Surgery This procedure involves the placement of a silicone device at the top portion of the stomach, intended to limit food consumption. Unlike other procedures, this surgery is reversible. After the surgery, it is required to follow a liquid-only diet with the gradual reintroduction of soft foods. Gastric Balloon Treatment This surgery involves the placement of a saline-filled silicone balloon in the stomach to limit the amount of food intake and to make patients feel full faster. The gastric balloon is not a permanent device, hence a commitment to a healthier lifestyle is needed to maintain the long-term success of the surgery. Gastric Plication This procedure involves creating large folds in the stomach to reduce its size. This surgery is also known as gastric imbrication and greater curvature plication. Getting The Surgery Depending on your condition, the surgeon may put you on a preoperative diet about 2 to 3 weeks prior to surgery. This is intended to shrink the liver and reduce fat in the abdomen, making the procedure safer. It is advisable to wait 12 to 18 months after the procedure to get pregnant. Be reminded that birth control pills do not work as well in patients who are overweight, and may not be effective during the time when your weight is changing. For this reason, please have an IUD or use condoms and spermicide with all intercourse. You can start exercising right after the surgery by taking it slow, such as short walks while in the hospital. As you recover, find a variety of activities that you can do and keep a regular exercising routine to burn off calories and stay healthy. Should You Travel to Get Bariatric Surgery? Bariatric Surgery can be life-changing to many - it provides a means to sustainable weight loss and reduces health risks that come with obesity. The procedure is increasing in popularity and some other countries may offer more competitive prices on top of high-quality healthcare. Cinderella Drip / Injection - More Than Just A Baby Skin Effect

The Rich Antioxidant Infusion For Your Skin And Body By Kath Wong | June 25th, 2021 Skin whitening injections have always been a trend to achieve a flawless snowy appearance, and it is no doubt that Cinderella Drip or Cinderella Injection has also been listed as one of the most popular treatment options available. However, there may be misconceptions about what the procedure could do; instead of merely functioning as a whitening agent, Cinderella Drip/Injection offers a few more health benefits in addition to that. What Really Is Cinderella Drip / Injection? Cinderella Drip/Injection is a popular treatment for achieving pearl-like beautiful skin. It is an infusion of various beauty ingredients and high concentration vitamins into the body; the effect plays an important role in preventing and rejuvenating aging skin. Moreover, it has a whitening effect, anti-acne effect as it controls sebum secretion, as well as moisturising power to give full benefits to the skin with natural collagen production. Like many other intravenous infusions, Cinderella Drip/Injection consists of well-known antioxidants such as Vitamin C and vitamin E. The formulation also contains glutathione supported with alpha-lipoic acid. The blend generally helps to fight the signs of skin aging, lightens and evens out skin tone, and boosts skin clarity. Moreover, it is able to help with the elimination of toxins and heavy metals from the body, at the same time combating free radicals which are the lead cause of aging. The immune system booster Vitamin C or ascorbic acid strengthens skin tissue, encourages the production of white blood cells, and removes toxins from the body. The popular skin lightening agent Glutathione does not just have a skin whitening effect but also helps to maintain a healthy liver. It has been proven that glutathione reduces cell damage in alcoholic and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease; furthermore, improves insulin sensitivity. For Cinderella Drip/Injection, glutathione works mainly to inhibit the enzyme tyrosinase that is responsible for skin pigmentation. The ultimate benefits of skin and health Alpha-lipoic acid is the fatty acid present in small doses which is an essential substance to help produce body energy. It has 400 times more antioxidative activity than vitamin C and E, which could effectively slow the signs of skin aging and also offer the role beyond aesthetics; it is believed to reduce inflammation in the body, lower blood sugar levels, as well as promote healthy functioning of nerves. The Procedure And Recovery A session of Cinderella Drip/Injection can be completed within 30 mins with no recovery period required. It gives the best results when combined with dietary therapy and exercise post-treatment. There are rarely side effects reported; skin rash may appear very slightly for some people. The procedure can be administered once every 7 to 10 days for the ideal improvements. You might also like

What Is Tooth Decay And How To Maintain Healthy Teeth

For the eternal bright smiles By Kath Wong | June 18th, 2021 Throughout our lifetime, tooth decay and cavities are among the world’s most common health problems which could happen in all ages, especially children, teenagers, and older adults. Our teeth are strong and yet delicate enough to get damaged when they have not been taken good care of.  Naturally, teeth appear covered in a hard, outer coating called enamel. The build-up of dental plaque, a thin film of bacteria on teeth, can happen every single day; this could cause acid production that can harm the enamel permanently, as well as having a high chance that can lead to a bigger problem known as cavities.  Cavities (dental caries) are holes in the teeth; they are simply caused by the accumulation of bacteria in the mouth along with the prolonged tooth decay left untreated. When the condition happens, there is nothing we could do but to have them fixed with fillings performed only by the dentists.    Tips To Prevent Tooth Decay Although we may have already experienced tooth decay at least once in our lifetime, it is never too late to start seeing the importance and taking notes about good oral hygiene.  Not just the teeth, but gums can have diseases too! Good oral hygiene is never doubted the necessity to keep both our teeth and gums healthy; here are some essential tips: 1. Never go to bed without brushing your teeth: It is important to brush your teeth at least twice a day, after waking up and before going to bed as this helps to remove plaque and bacteria that could be stuck and inhabit your teeth for a long period of time.  2. Make sure you brush your teeth using the correct technique: Instead of sawing back and forth, the right way to brush your teeth is by using small circular motions in every dimension (front, back, and top of every tooth). Avoid brushing too hard as it may cause permanent damage to the tooth enamel as well as the gums. Do not forget to brush your tongue, where the bacteria can accumulate. 3. Floss once a day: Flossing can reach and remove the plaque and bacteria between the teeth where it is difficult for toothbrushes to do so; it also helps to prevent bad breath by getting rid of debris and food that has become trapped between the teeth. Gently push the floss all the way down to the gum line before hugging the sides with up-and-down motions to not cause pain.  4. Consider using a mouthwash: Mouthwashes are not meant to substitute brushing and flossing, but they are used to complement both practices as they contain an antibacterial ingredient called chlorhexidine that helps to control plaque and gingivitis.  5. No smoking: The body takes more time to heal as smoking harms the body’s immune system, this includes the healing of tissues in the mouth as well. As a consequence, smoking leads to yellowing of the teeth and tongue, giving the breath a bad odour.  6. Control your diet: Limit starches and sugary foods for better teeth health; sugars can lead to cavities, whereas too many starchy foods can also cause tooth decay as they linger in the mouth and break down into simple sugars, which the bacteria feed on. Drinking more plain water and consuming fruits and vegetables are highly recommended. 7. A teeth checkup every 6 months:  Your dentist can help to check for visual signs of tooth decay, cavities, gum diseases, mouth cancer, and various other issues. Moreover, it is best to schedule regular teeth cleaning sessions to ensure you have the plaque and hardened tartar removed in time before they start to harm your teeth.  Check out the dental treatments available on our website: Dubai    Kuala Lumpur    Bangkok    Ho Chi Minh City  Chiang Mai    Bogota   Mexicali  Budapest    Rome    Bali    You might also like

Stay Safe from HIV with PrEP

Effective protection for high-risk individuals By Azra Shuib | June 11th, 2021 What is PrEP? PrEP stands for pre-exposure prophylaxis, the antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) taken by HIV-negative people daily as a measure to protect themselves from HIV. PrEP is available in the form of pills that are to be taken orally, or in the form of injections. They are meant to be consumed before potential exposure to the virus. It is highly effective - studies have shown that PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99% when taken daily. Among people who inject drugs, PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV by at least 74% when taken daily. If PrEP is not taken consistently, the effectiveness reduces and condoms should be used as an important prevention strategy. However, PrEP does not offer protection against other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and blood-borne diseases like Hepatitis C, syphilis, and gonorrhoea. Therefore, PrEP is usually delivered as part of a package for HIV/STI prevention services.    Effective Consumption How long do people have to take PrEP before it is highly effective? Doctors say that it provides the highest protection from HIV at: · About 7 days for receptive anal sex · About 21 days for receptive vaginal sex and injection drug use · No data are available for insertive anal sex or insertive vaginal sex. You should seek advice from the doctor if you are concerned.   How PrEP works Reverse transcriptase is one of the enzymes present in HIV, Human Immunodeficiency Virus. PrEP will work to block this enzyme, preventing more copies of the virus from replicating in the body. PrEP is available either in the form of pills or injections. Consumptions and duration of effectiveness may differ accordingly. At our affiliated clinic, PrEP pills will be used for prescriptions.   Contraindications for PrEP · HIV positive individuals · Estimated creatinine clearance < 60ml/min · Signs of symptoms of acute HIV infection, probable exposure to HIV within 72 hrs · Allergy or contraindication to any medicine in the PrEP regimen like TDF / FTC   HIV PrEP vs. HIV PEP You may have also heard about PEP. It is different from PrEP in these ways: HIV PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) · A daily pill for those at a high risk of developing AIDS, typically those with potential exposure to HIV. HIV PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) · Taken after potential exposure to HIV in order to prevent infection/AIDS. · Must be taken within 72 hours of exposure. · Consists of 2 -3 antiretroviral medications which must be taken for about 28 days Prevention is better than cure. Chemical Peels - The Simple Procedure For A Fresher And Younger Appearance

Get to know the different types and discover which may be the ones for your skin By Kath Wong | June 4th, 2021 A chemical peel is commonly known as the skin exfoliating process done by acids, but there is more to it that you would want to know about before opting in for one.  Exfoliation or skin peeling removes dead skin cells to reveal the healthier and smoother skin underneath; chemical peels are able to help you achieve the results with just a simple step of applying the chemical solution to the skin, leaving it on for a few minutes, and neutralizing the treated area to complete the procedure. There are a few different common types of chemical peel available which vary by the penetration level as well as their roles to target and repair various skin types; and here is why in this article you will read about the differences and get the idea of suitable peel for yourself.   The Skin Peeling Depths And Targets There are 3 depths of skin resurfacing that can be performed by the chemical peels, the choice mainly depends on the skin issues that you wish to work on. The depths are categorized into light, medium, and deep, while different acids are used for each depth. Starting with the mildest - light chemical peel, also called a superficial peel, removes the outer layer of skin known as the epidermis. The acids are characterized by the AHA and BHA. Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) is the mildest option which often consists of glycolic acid or lactic acid, whereas Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA) is lipid-based, such as salicylic acid.  · Lactic acid, with its large molecular structure, is gentle and best for sensitive skin. Derived from milk, the acid helps to even out your skin tone, addresses age spots, melasma, rough texture, along with fine lines. Moreover, it offers a good hydrating effect. · Glycolic acid is derived from sugar cane and functions similarly to lactic acid. The difference is that glycolic acid has a smaller molecular structure, this physical property allows it to penetrate deeper than lactic acid, going the extra mile to help with sun-damaged skin. In addition, glycolic acid benefits the skin with a collagen-boosting effect, which in the long run can help to increase skin thickness. However, it may stand more of a chance of skin irritation than lactic acid.  · Salicylic acid is well known for oily and acne-prone skin. The acid treats acne in both younger and older ones by encouraging exfoliation along with the unclogging of pores; it also has anti-inflammatory properties, which can help to reduce skin redness and irritation. TCA (trichloroacetic acid) peels are the most commonly used medium to medium-deep chemical peels. The acid is able to penetrate through the epidermis and up to the surface of the dermis. It can be customized with varying strengths, depending on your skin needs, for instance, advanced pigmentary issues, sun damage, deeper wrinkles, acne scars, etc. Deep chemical peel - phenols or carbolic acid targets deep wrinkles and scars by removing the epidermis along with the mid and lower layers of the dermis. It is the strongest peeling agent which can result in dramatic skin rejuvenation with a long-lasting effect.   Is It Okay To Perform The Treatment By Yourself? Although there are various do-it-yourself chemical peels available all over the market, it is always a good idea to receive the treatments with trained professionals in clinics and hospitals.  Visit our websites for more info and achieve your flawless glowing skin with us now: Japan: @ TI Clinic, Tokyo     Malaysia: @ Beverly Wilshire Medical Centre, Kuala Lumpur    @ Toscana Medi Clinic, Kuala Lumpur    @ The Life Clinic, Kuala Lumpur  @ Lyfe Clinic, Kuala Lumpur  @ Dr Wee Clinic, Johor Bahru You might also like

Penile Implant Surgery - Treatment for Men Erectile Dysfunction

A prosthesis to help you achieve a better sexual life By Azra Shuib | May 26th, 2021 Erectile Dysfunction or mostly abbreviated as ED is rarely talked about openly. There is a lot of stigma and embarrassment surrounding the condition, although according to studies by National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, 1 out of 4 men over the age of 60 will suffer some form of ED. ED is the inability to achieve an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse.   Causes of ED: · Depression, anxiety or other mental health conditions · Stress · Heart disease · Clogged blood vessels (atherosclerosis) · High cholesterol · High blood pressure · Diabetes · Obesity · Metabolic syndrome — a condition involving increased blood pressure, high insulin levels, body fat around the waist and high cholesterol · Parkinson's disease · Multiple sclerosis · Certain prescription medications · Tobacco use · Peyronie's disease — development of scar tissue inside the penis · Alcoholism and other forms of substance abuse · Sleep disorders · Treatments for prostate cancer or enlarged prostate · Surgeries or injuries that affect the pelvic area or spinal cord · Low testosterone   Symptoms of ED include: · Trouble getting an erection · Trouble keeping an erection · Reduced sexual desire There are a lot of treatments like medications and penis pumps as well as lifestyle shifts suggestions available for ED, but a lot of men go through those measures without success. A Penile Implant Surgery is a treatment that can help with ED when other therapies have failed. Penile Implants allow men with ED to get a firm erection. There are two main types of implants which are semi-rigid and inflatable.  How Penile Implant Surgery Works Penile Implant Surgery works by inserting a suitable implant into the patient's penis. Sometimes, an additional penile prosthesis will be implanted during the surgery to reconstruct the shape of the penis when scarring has caused erections to curve, often known as Peyronie's disease. The inflatable penile prosthesis consists of two attached cylinders, a reservoir, and a pump.  The two cylinders are inserted into the penis and connected by tubing to a separate reservoir of saline.  To inflate the prosthesis, you will have to press the pump hidden in the scrotum. The pump will transfer saline from the reservoir to the cylinders in the penis to inflate and cause an erection. To deflate it, pressing needs to be done on the deflation valve at the base of the pump to enable fluid to return to its reservoir and hence it will be deflated back to the normal flaccid state. Common Implants · Three-piece implant Consists of a fluid reservoir in the abdominal wall, pump and release valve in the scrotum and two inflatable cylinders inside the penis. This type gives the most rigid erection, but there are risks for the parts to malfunction. · Two-piece implant For this implant, the reservoir is a part of the pump that is implanted in the scrotum. The surgery is less complicated but erections may be less firm than with the three-piece implant. · Semi Rigid implants This type of implants is not inflatable, meaning the implants stay firm all the time. Positioning is not complicated - you can position it against your body or bend it away for sexual intercourse. This type of device is less likely to malfunction but it can put a constant pressure on the penis. There are pros and cons to each type of implant, so a discussion with your attending physician can help you with choosing the right one. Generally, the procedure will look like this: 1. Consultation and examination of the condition 2. Application of general anesthesia 3. An incision will be made on your lower abdomen, the base of your penis, or just below the head of your penis 4. Insertion of the implant (and additional prosthesis in some cases) 5. Closing of the incision   Contraindications for Penile Implant Surgery · Erectile dysfunction that is situational (potentially reversible) · An infection, such as a pulmonary infection or urinary tract infection · Diabetes that is not well-controlled   Outlook The recovery process may take several weeks and you can resume sexual activity in about four to six weeks. The surgery has a high satisfaction rate and can be a good option for those who have found that other treatments have failed. Over a 10-year period, it can be considered the most cost-effective treatment for ED. Interested in getting the surgery? Click here or send your enquiries to us to learn more.   You might also like

Rectocele Surgery - The Solution For A Weakened Pelvic Organ

Treat it for a better quality of life By Azra Shuib | May 20th, 2021 A rectocele is a bulging of the rectum into the vagina. This can happen when the tissues that support the rectum and vagina are weakened and torn. Vaginal childbirth, chronic constipation and heavy lifting can increase your risk of getting a rectocele. The condition can cause symptoms like incomplete emptying of the rectum, sensation of sitting on a ball and other discomforts. You may also feel a sense of fullness in the vagina, pain during sex as well as rectal pain. All of this can affect your quality of life. Left untreated, it can get worse over time and interfere with your daily life even more. Rectocele is usually caused by the weakening of the pelvic floor muscles and the thinning of the tissue between the rectum and vagina. Although it is often associated with pregnancy and childbirth, women without children can have it too. There are several factors that can lead to the weakening of the pelvic floor muscles, such as the history of chronic constipation, severe straining with bowel movements, rectal surgeries and/or gynecological treatments like hysterectomy.   Getting A Treatment In order to stop pelvic discomfort from getting worse, it’s important to get a proper diagnosis and the right treatment. Usually, surgery is the best option, although non-surgical approaches can also help if the condition is not as serious. Gynecologists can diagnose your condition and determine the suitable treatment. A rectocele is usually detected during a physical examination and further tests can help to assess its severity.   Rectocele Surgery    Through surgery, the rectocele can be repaired and the rectum can be restored to its original position.   Surgery is usually done through a vaginal approach, but some conditions may need a combined abdominal and vaginal approach. Your most suitable surgery method would be determined by the doctor. The incision would be made along the vaginal skin overlying the rectum and to assess areas of weakness and needing repair. Stitches will be made into the weakened tissue to close any tears and encourage scar tissue to build in the area for support.   Potential Complications Just like in any other surgeries, there are risks associated with Rectocele Surgery. It’s important to follow your doctor’s advice for the best recovery process. Complications may include: · Pain, but the doctor may prescribe some medicine to control it. · Blood clots. To manage this, blood thinners may be injected, or walking soon after surgery may be encouraged. · Infection · Bleeding · Problems related to anesthesia · Sexual dysfunction caused by poor healing of the vaginal incisions. Not all rectocele surgery procedures are 100% successful. Therefore, it is pivotal to follow the aftercare instructions as given by the surgeon to increase the probability of permanent success and change.   Treatment Aftercare · Take medications as prescribed. · During your recovery, any light activity is good for you. But do not perform strenuous activities or lift heavy objects until the doctor says it’s okay to do so. · To prevent or treat gas, stay away from carbonated drinks and drink more warm drinks. · Eat healthy diets and drink enough water to prevent constipation. · Take plenty of rest especially for 2 weeks after the procedure. · Refrain from sexual intercourse for 6 weeks.   Non-Surgical Treatment In a non-surgical approach, the aim is to have a good bowel movement and softer stools; as strained bowel movements and constipation can increase the risk of getting a rectocele.   More tips: · Drinking enough water daily · Eating high-fibre foods · Performing Kegel exercise and other pelvic floor therapies · Avoiding excessive straining with bowel movements · Applying pressure the back of the vagina during bowel movements · Hormone replacement therapy   The Pros and Cons of A Rectocele Surgery Still, are you wondering if surgery is the best procedure for your condition? Here is a breakdown of the advantages and limitations of a Rectocele Surgery for you to make the best decision for your body: Pros · Stops pelvic discomfort · Improves bowel emptying · Safe procedure · High success rate (80 - 90%) · Improves comfort and quality of life · Allow for more physical activities and a more comfortable sexual life Cons · Complications associated with major pelvic surgery · Vaginal discharge may occur for up to 6 weeks and you may need to wear pads For more information or to book a treatment in Mexicali, please go to this link: Rectocele Surgery @ Mexicali You might also like

Things You May Want To Know Before Getting Breast Implants

What are the common types of breast implant, and do they expire? By Kath Wong | May 12th, 2021 When it comes to breast augmentation, we know there are various options out there to choose what actually suits us the most. Many of us prefer something long-lasting and permanent, in which this article sees the purpose of sharing some details about breast implants.  Breast implants are known to be the best in having the long-lasting effect among the other methods available to enhance your breast shape and size with its solid substance that does not get absorbed into the body over time. It is true that these implants can last at least 10 years, except under some circumstances where the rupture occurs.    Types of Breast Implant There are 2 main types of breast implants, popularly known as Saline Implants and Silicone Implants. At this point, you may get the idea that saline means saltwater while silicone is the synthetic material in the form of a gel. Both the implants give the ideal breast shape and size just fine, do you wonder what are the real differences then?           To start off with, saline implants have existed longer than silicone implants, since the 1960s. Unlike the silicone implants, saline implants, with an outer shell made of silicone, are inserted empty and filled with sterile salt water after. This gives an advantage as the incision site would be smaller and less noticeable than inserting the whole finished silicone implant into the breast; also, they are typically less expensive. However, it has been reported that saline implants are more easily seen under the skin as they ripple along with the movements and you may feel water sloshing. On the other hand, silicone implants are made of silicone cases filled with silicone gel, which give the feel similar to human fat and usually come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Also known as “gummy bear” implants, they are firmer and remain in shape without the ripple effect.    Do Breast Implants Have An Expiry Date?   Breast implants do not have exact expiry dates but rather the chance of failing that would lead to leakage or rupture caused by the normal wear or strain on the materials over time. Although implants can rupture any time after the insertion procedure, the statistics have been reported that the modern type of silicone gel implant has less than 3% possibility to fail. Depending on the cases, some may need a replacement sooner, some will last far longer, and many can last for a lifetime. Hence on average, the implants actually last between 10 to 25 years. An MRI is recommended every few years to keep an update on your implants. What Happens When Breast Implants Fail? Saline breast implants have a higher chance of experiencing rupture than silicone breast implants. When they do, you will be able to feel the leakage as the water solution will be released from the silicone shell and the changes in breast size and shape can be noticed immediately. It is safe as saline will get absorbed by the body and the silicone shell remains within the scar tissue which requires surgery to extract it.  On the other hand, it is less likely to notice the rupture on silicone breast implants and this is often known as ‘silent ruptures’ or ‘silent leak’. This may sound scary but worry not, today’s “gummy bear” implant developed with cohesive silicone gel makes sure the implant stays put together in a one-piece structure, preventing further complications.    Which Type Of Implant Should I Go For? Both types of breast implant are generally considered safe, it depends on your preference of shape, size, and finish. Many find that silicone breast implants look and feel just like natural breasts, but the fact that saline implants result in smaller scars is another major factor to compare and consider between the two. What’s more important is to always look for a professional, reputable board-certified surgeon for safe and reliable results. The Beauty of Permanent Makeup in Enhancing Your Appearance

Get flawless makeup that does not fade by the end of the day By Azra Shuib | April 30th, 2021 A lot of us want to wake up in the morning with a face that takes zero effort. Not a lot of people can get out of the house feeling confident without a bit of mascara, lipstick or full-face makeup. And some people may find the routine to reapply makeup after certain activities inconvenient, but just can’t face the world with a paled lipstick after lunch. Then there are those who feel that makeups are such a waste since they don’t last beyond the expiration date. So having to wear makeup just for the sake of not wasting them can rob the joy out of the beautifying routine. All of those issues can be eliminated with a cosmetic technique called permanent makeup. It is a method to enhance your facial appearance using pigments that are implanted into the surface of the skin. The design produces results similar to makeup, such as eyeliner, eyebrow colour, lipstick or even fake moles. Some people employ permanent makeup as a foundation or ‘second skin’ to disguise scars or spots in the skin caused by diseases like vitiligo. Some may also refer to permanent makeup as makeup tattoo (like eyebrow tattoo) or semi-permanent makeup. But permanent makeup is not actually a tattoo. The traditional tattoos are made using ink, but permanent makeup uses colour pigments that look realistic with your skin complexion. Permanent makeup also lasts 1 to 3 years and fades gradually, while a traditional tattoo does not.   How is it done? Usually, the beautician will assess your features and ask you about your desired results. This is to match the most ideal shape or colour of the makeup in order to enhance your features and match your desires. A typical procedure looks like this: 1. Consultation will be done and you can discuss the most ideal colour / shade / shape for your face. 2. Anesthesia will be applied. 3. Semi-permanent makeup will be applied with a needle machine. 4. The treated area will be cooled down after treatment is completed. Permanent makeup is safe, but there are considerations you should take. First of all, you have to ensure that you do not have any sensitivities or allergies to ink, pigments or a lot of ingredients in makeup. You can also see a dermatologist beforehand to make sure that it’s safe for you to get a permanent makeup procedure. Secondly, do some research about the clinics you should go to. Cheap prices do not always mean that the procedures are of the best value. Consider the artist’s expertise, the clinic’s reputation and patients’ testimonials. You need to go to the right artist and clinic to avoid infections or other major risks. During recovery, you can expect some scabbing and dryness as the treated area heals before revealing the final colour. Recovery may take 2 to 3 weeks, and the specific guidelines will depend on the type of permanent makeup you choose.   If it does not last forever, is it really worth it? Permanent makeup lasts 1 to 3 years with good care. So although it is not really permanent, it definitely lasts longer than the eyeliner or mascara that smudges off at the end of the day! And considering that permanent makeup is much more hygienic compared to makeup - since makeups like lipsticks are stored in a container for a long time and may collect bacteria in the process - permanent makeup is definitely worth trying. The needles used are sterilized and never reused after a procedure. So with the right clinic and artist, it’s definitely safe, satisfying and worth every penny! Ease your daily getting ready routine. What Can Cryosurgery Do For Skin Problems?

The use and benefits behind cryosurgery explained. By Kath Wong | April 26th, 2021 It is undeniable that people would always look and opt-in for any non- or minimally invasive treatments available that are at the same time affordable and effective. The same goes for the treatment for skin problems as well as tumours, instead of having repetitive sessions of laser treatments or injections, an alternative treatment known as Cryosurgery is recommended in certain cases.    The Cryosurgery Cryosurgery is a minimally invasive yet effective treatment specially designed for skin problems that include abnormal tissues such as tumours, warts, sun spots, keloids, as well as cancers or precancerous lesions on the skin. The procedure utilizes extremely cold liquid nitrogen at a temperature of -196 degree celsius, which is also the boiling point of the liquid nitrogen. Once it comes in contact with the skin, the temperature of the skin immediately decreases and ice is formed within the skin layer, this results in cell death and the renewal of cells would be stimulated. Although cryosurgery is not known as the first line of defence for curing cancer, it can be used in the case when other forms of treatment have proven unsuccessful, especially in situations where cancer recurs following other treatments.  Moreover, the procedure is most often performed to treat cancers or precancerous lesions on the skin but it isn’t limited to them; cryosurgery is also used on some internal organs when disease and other problems make conventional surgery difficult or risky to operate, for instance, liver and prostate. The primary treatment for early prostate cancer that presents within the prostate is known to utilize cryosurgery as the cure. Also, it is performed when cancer returns after other therapies. Benefits of Cryosurgery The major benefits of cryosurgery include a short preparation time, low risk of infection, and minimal wound care. Prior to the treatment patients do not need any specific preparation, except for the ones who are undergoing the procedure for internal organs, at least 12 hours of fasting is required. After the treatment, for wound caring, you are only required to keep the treated area clean and dry. Cryosurgery has a lower risk of infection and rarely leaves scars compared to incisional surgeries. Treatments for Cleft Lip and Palate

It is important to get treatments at the right time so that your kids can enjoy a normal life ahead By Azra Shuib | April 11th, 2021 Although upsetting for any parent, cleft lip and palate is quite common. Here is a statistic of how many babies are born with Cleft Lip / Cleft Palate, according to the CDC website: · About 1 in every 1,600 babies is born with cleft lip with cleft palate in the United States. · About 1 in every 2,800 babies is born with cleft lip without cleft palate in the United States. · About 1 in every 1,700 babies is born with cleft palate in the United States. There is no known cause for this condition, so these birth malformations cannot be prevented. It can sometimes be associated with genetic conditions, environmental factors and medication taken by the mother while she is pregnant. Some drugs may cause Cleft Lip and Palate, such as anti-seizure, anticonvulsant drugs, acne drugs, drugs used to treat cancer, arthritis and psoriasis. Is there a difference between Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate? A cleft is a split in the upper lip and/or the roof of the mouth (palate). Babies can be born with just a cleft lip, a cleft palate, or even both. The gap is caused by the incomplete development of the baby's face in the womb. They mostly occur as isolated birth defects and can be corrected. A cleft lip may just affect 1 side of the lip or there may be 2 clefts (unilateral or bilateral). A cleft palate can be an opening at the back of the mouth, or it may be a split that runs all the way from the back to the front of the mouth. Untreated cleft lip and palate may lead to these issues: · Difficulty to breastfeed or feed on a normal bottle as they cannot form a good seal with their mouth. · Dental problems, as the child's teeth, may not develop properly and they may be at a higher risk of tooth decay. · Hearing problems, especially to some babies with a cleft palate, as they are more vulnerable to ear infections and fluid build-up in the ears. · Speech problems, including unclear or nasal-sounding speech. Can it be corrected? Yes. In most babies, a series of surgeries can be conducted to restore normal function as they are growing up. This way, they can enjoy a better quality of life.   Cleft Lip Repair Cleft lip repair is ideally done when your baby is within 3 to 6 months of age. In the procedure, the surgeon will make incisions on both sides of the cleft and create flaps of tissue. The flaps will then be stitched together, including the lip muscles. This creates and restores a more normal lip appearance, structure and function. Initial nasal repair if needed will usually be done at the same time. This procedure is done with general anesthesia.   Cleft Palate Repair Cleft Palate repair is ideally done by the age of 12 months, or earlier if possible. During the repair procedure, the surgeon will make incisions on both sides of the cleft and reposition the tissues and muscles to create a fake roof. After that, the repair is then stitched closed. This procedure is done with general anesthesia.   For children with cleft palate, an ear tube surgery may also be done. Ear tubes can be placed to reduce the risk of chronic ear fluid build-up, which can lead to hearing loss. The surgery involves placing tiny bobbin-shaped tubes in the eardrum to create an opening to prevent fluid build-up.   Possible Side Effects Although getting the surgery will significantly improve your child's appearance, ability to eat, breathe and talk, as well as the overall quality of life, it's best to talk to the doctor regarding the risks. As with all surgeries, there are some risks and it's important to understand them. Risks in the treatment can include: · Bleeding · Infection · Poor healing · Widening or elevation of scars · Temporary or permanent damage to nerves, blood vessels or other internal structures (rare) Therefore, when choosing a hospital for a treatment, it is best to go to hospitals renowned for their excellent care, expertise and service quality. Getting the best for your child is especially important to increase the best possible outcome.   Risk Factors According to the experts, some factors may increase the likelihood of a baby getting a cleft lip/cleft palate. The factors include: · Family history. · Exposure to substances during pregnancy, such as cigarettes, alcohol or certain medications. · There is also some evidence that links women who are diagnosed with diabetes before pregnancy may have an increased risk of having a baby with a cleft lip with or without cleft palate. · Obesity during pregnancy. According to studies, males are more likely to have a cleft lip with or without cleft palate, whereas females are more likely to develop cleft palate without cleft lip.   Prevention Steps Although Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate generally can’t be prevented, there are some tips to lower your risks and get a better understanding of the condition.  If you know that you have a family history of the birth defect, consider getting genetic counselling before becoming pregnant. This can help you to get more information and proceed with any possible prevention measure. Besides that, it is also to alter your lifestyle and make a change for the better. Take prenatal vitamins as recommended by your doctor, practice a healthy diet and lifestyle; and refrain from tobacco and alcohol, as the use of tobacco and alcohol can increase your risk of having a baby with birth defects. All in all, it is important that you get much needed support if you know you are at risk, or if you have a baby with the condition. Since it can’t be prevented, any parent who finds out that their baby has the condition can feel a very emotional experience, and the whole treatment process can be overwhelming. Therefore, know that you are not alone. Talk to your doctor if you feel any psychological issues, get involved with cleft support groups and understand the condition deeper to know what is the best that you can do. Keep in mind that it is a treatable condition and a lot of children who are treated for cleft lip and palate grow up to live completely normal lives. Treating and Preventing Alopecia with Scalp Microneedling

What Causes Hair Loss And How Scalp Microneedling Can Help By Kath Wong | April 2nd, 2021 While we are busy with everyday lives, it is important to never neglect the routine to check on your hair condition at least once in a while. There are a few common factors that could affect the health of our hair and result in hair thinning or hair loss.  A medical term known for hair loss is Alopecia. The condition causes hair to fall out and prevent them from growing back. With alopecia, the hair loss pattern occurs in small patches, which may connect and eventually become noticeable. This happens commonly among men, but women do report to experience it as well (making approximately 40% of the total people).  Causes of Alopecia 1. Aging As we age, our hair tends to thin when the hair follicles lose strength in producing new hair effectively; signs include a change in its colour and the gradual receding hairline. The sooner you notice that your hair is thinning, the more likely treatments could work. Although there is no permanent treatment available to reverse or stop the process from happening along with aging just yet, what we can do is to slow the cycle, like anti-aging.  2. Hormonal imbalances Hormonal imbalances that could develop in both men and women can influence hair loss. We often think that hormones either mean the level of estrogen or testosterone, but there is more to that as the hormones determining thyroid level is also capable of leading to hair thinning.  3. Lack of body nutrients Certain vitamins and minerals like iron and folic acid are known to help in enhancing the hair follicles to function properly. Lacking the essential ingredients can have a serious effect on your health and immune system, which also includes hair loss. 4. Stress Stress impacts our health in many ways, one of them involves our hair. While our hair follicles are trying to grow new hair, stress can act as a parasite to kill them. Also, it can cause the existing hair to loosen and fall earlier in the hair growth cycle.  5. Unsuitable hair products Some hair products can damage our hair follicles permanently; we must choose products that are suitable for the hair health and observe if we are allergic to any of the common ingredients that actually contribute to hair loss such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), Parabens, Propylene Glycol, Diethanolamine (DEA), Fragrance, Imidazolidinyl Urea, and Sodium Chloride.  Scalp Microneedling Hair loss can be one of the serious emotional issues people suffer from. Scalp microneedling can help to improve the condition.  Microneedling is popularly known as a collagen-boosting skin treatment. The procedure is effective to diminish acne scars and improve skin tone and texture. It works by rolling over the tiny needles to pierce the surface and cause micro-injuries. Each injury is minuscule, nowhere near large enough to cause pain, bleeding, or scarring; only redness would be visible.  As a result of scalp microneedling, the scalp would respond to the “injuries” by boosting collagen production, to treat and prevent hair loss. Collagen is necessary to maintain healthy hair follicles; without the sufficient amount of collagen available, hair follicles could weaken and this would lead to slow hair growth and eventually become dormant. While the collagens are being produced, microneedling also helps to improve blood flow, bringing nutrients to repair and nourish the scalp.  The hair-regrowth cycle with scalp microneedling can be noticed as early as within 12 weeks. Many people would opt-in for a combination with PRP treatment for more effective results.  Check these pages for more information on hair treatments: Hair Transplants   You might also like

A sneak peek into NK Cell Therapy

Intravenous therapy for the healthier immune system By Kath Wong | March 17th, 2021 What is NK Cell Therapy? Natural Killer (NK) cells are one of the sub-types of white blood cells present in humans with a role of first-line defence for the body’s natural immune system. They are capable of differentiating the target cells that are infected and uninfected (normal cells), which then their role is to eliminate the infected cells and this may help to control early signs of cancer. NK cells respond quickly to a wide variety of pathological challenges; they also enhance the body’s immune response by releasing certain chemicals called cytokines which support other immune cells in the body.    The Use of NK Cells Natural Killer cells in high volume with full potency have the ability to fight off many diseases which include cancer and immunocompromising diseases such as malignancies, viruses, HIV, and Aids. Large amounts of NK cells strengthen the patient’s immune system. Not only do NK cells eliminate the infected target cells, but they also work to prevent the recurrence of those viral or cancerous cells after with its stronger memory to attack.  Moreover, NK cell therapy also improves blood circulation throughout the body; and with the enhanced immune system, the effect can result in better skin quality, normalized skin cells turnover, as well as the better functioning of skin cells.    What Is Done During NK Cell Therapy? NK cells are the most difficult to be produced by the body. For effective results, the patients are required to receive over 5 to 10 billion NK cells for the best efficacy. The procedure involves consultation, proposal of the appropriate treatment protocol, and blood tests to check for any infectious diseases. Once set, a 50 ml blood sample will be collected through an intravenous method to start the NK cell therapy. The blood sample will be taken to filter out unwanted substances and cultured to multiply the NK cells. The culture period takes about 2 weeks to complete. Transfusion of the cultured NK cells will be performed intravenously.    Before Receiving NK Cell Therapy Just like every other therapy, you must know the do's and dont's as well as how to prepare yourself for NK Cell Therapy. Here are the things you might want to know prior to the treatment: Ensure that the blood samples are processed and cultured stringent in a tightly controlled Cell Culture Center (CPC). Safety tests such as Sterility Test, Mycoplasma Denial Test, and Endotoxin Test should be done prior to the transfusion along with performance tests which include the test for a total number of cells, NK cell content, cell viability, and cell damage activity. It is important to note that this is not a full or sure cure for cancer, but a great adjunct with other therapeutic agents or medications prescribed to the patients. NK cell therapy is not painful and has minimal side effects. The patients may feel light nauseous or fatigue but hospitalization is not required. A small percentage of patients’ immune systems may reject the cells, in which symptoms include fever, rash, or vomiting and the doctor should be contacted immediately.  The treatment is recommended especially for those who seek a solution for the weakened immune systems; though it is not a full cure for most diseases, NK cell therapy is believed to be the right step in treating malignant cells.  Browse through NK Cell Therapies at our affiliate centres:  NK Cell Therapy @ Phuket, Thailand   You might also like

Although all of us are isolated, know that you are not alone By Azra Shuib | March 10th, 2021 By now, it’s not difficult to understand why a huge number of people are overwhelmed with uncertainties and unknowns. A lot of people are working tirelessly around the clock to reduce the COVID-19 spread while some are fighting to just live calmly. To be caught in these unprecedented times can cause one to be in a lot of stress.   Those who might become more stressed include: People at high-risk for developing a severe case of COVID-19 if contracted Healthcare workers and other frontline workers Children and teens Patients with mental health conditions Patients with chronic illnesses who need to regularly visit the hospital People who are facing financial instability due to the pandemic It's substantial to equip yourself by learning how to manage stress so that you could arrange your thoughts rationally and overcome it. Above all, it’s also important that you stay healthy as there is no worse timing for you to fall ill especially at times like this. Coping with stress in a good way will make you, your loved ones and your community stronger. Here are some ways to manage stress during COVID-19 pandemic:     1. Control your news and social media consumption As a lot of us are spending most of our time by ourselves. And that means more time with our smartphones. It seems like the timeline is flooded with news reports and health statistics every hour, bringing undue stress. Undeniably, there are also positive messages spattered across to keep our spirits up. Hence it is important to choose the kind of content we would like to see. Follow only the reliable news sources and avoid accounts that serve unchecked information. It is good to stay informed, but it is equally pivotal that we control it the best way we can as a selfcare step.      2. Have a new routine to keep you busy Consider waking up at the same time each day and have a routine to avoid soaking up too much pandemic news or wasting time scrolling the screen. Get in healthy activities such as journaling, regular house cleaning, cooking healthy foods and exercising. Although the internet can induce stress, it’s also a getaway to learning new stuff everyday. Start learning new recipes, crafts or skills; or you can even get in a workout session with a lot of videos and online classes available on social media. Just because you’re at home more often now, it doesn’t mean that you can’t have fun. Take it as an opportunity to do something you love even longer. This may be gardening, painting, designing and others.      3. Postpone major life decisions and resolve personal issues You have probably looked forward to that important life event, that is until COVID-19 came about. If you are already so stressed about it, it’s best to delay it until time permits. Try to keep things in perspective and be hopeful that this difficult time shall pass if not ease, and normal life will resume. Resolve personal conflicts that may be amplified while everyone is asked to stay at home. Communicate with people with honesty and get in touch with those who can help. Try to list your issues and solve them gradually day by day to help ease the mental burden.      4. Control your workload If you are one of those people who are working from home, you might face a problem in balancing work and personal life. Avoid doing work for long hours and continuously, as this could lead to more stress and health issues. Take breaks when you need to relax your strained eyes and incorrect posture. Have a goal of what to accomplish in the day and try to avoid additional responsibilities that you know will consume too much of your energy. Learn to say ‘no’ so you could deliver a better output each day. Keep in mind that your tasks will continue everyday and won’t be finished, therefore look into the bigger picture and don’t stress too much about the small, meticulous stuff.     5. Follow expert-recommended health guidelines Practice the new norm as instructed by the World Health Organization. This includes frequent hand-washing, physical distancing, practicing respiratory etiquette and applying good hygiene measures. Pandemic Woes: How to Manage Lockdown Weight Gain

Being in isolation is not an excuse By Azra Shuib | March 3rd, 2021 Quarantine weight gain shouldn’t be a surprise to a lot of people. Since the COVID-19 pandemic started, our routines have been disrupted, causing stress and mindless habits. But now most of us have managed to understand and practice the new norm better each day, so with some lifestyle shifts, there are ways to get back on track and reverse the scale. Causes of weight gain can be plenty, but some factors can largely affect your lockdown pounds: Stress Living with COVID-19 has altered our lives in a major way. We have been isolated for longer than what we’ve been through before and it’s uncertain when things are going to be normal again. These changes can cause stress even when you don’t realize it. And all the stress can lead to weight gain. When we are stressed, though we might not realize or even ignore it, the body still senses stress, and the fight-or-flight response is activated. This stimulates the body to not give up any calories in order to use it when energy is needed to fight or flee. Learning more about this physiological response can help you to learn when to relax and manage stress. Mindless Snacking If you love to snack during work, then the work-from-home lifestyle has probably amplified that habit. You’re at home longer, the kitchen is nearer, and a growing number of people are cooking meals at home too. Previously, on-the-go lifestyle means eating breakfast and lunch that could fit easily in our schedule. But now the options are endless. If we let loose on our eating habit, weight gain is expected. Less Sleep The body needs enough sleep to recover and balance the ‘hunger hormones’. When we are deprived of sleep, the body makes more ghrelin (the hormone that tells your brain that you’re hungry and have to increase food intake), and less leptin (the hormone that tells your brain that you are full and inhibits hunger).  Being sleep deprived can lead to hormonal balance, making you feel hungrier and more tired. Therefore, getting enough rest and quality sleep will definitely improve your appetite. No Exercise A lot of us may find that exercising activities have reduced during this quarantine season since we can’t go out. If you have always associated exercises with outdoors, then it may have been difficult to maintain an active lifestyle. Some people even have a hard time to maintain good mental health, let alone a good workout routine.   So How To Reduce The Pandemic Gains? The first thing you should understand is that weight loss during this pandemic season is completely possible. A good mindset is necessary to shed excessive pounds.   Do you need to lose weight? Well, as a general rule, a healthy BMI is between 18.5 and 25. And if your BMI is between 25 and 30, it means you are overweight and it’s a good time to adjust your diet and routine before your weight increases. When BMI reaches 30, it will get more difficult to lose weight. In all cases, commitment, discipline and a strong will are necessary to achieve your ideal weight. And do not chastise the weighing scale and mirror as you would need to track your progress. Take the opportunity to be away from people and all hustle and bustle of the city to really focus on managing your weight.   Inch Loss Strategies Manage Your Stress and Allow Emotional Breaks In the midst of so much uncertainty and saddening news, allow yourself to take a break and indulge in relaxing activities. If you need to take a day off, please take it to re-plan your life or clear up your mind. Meditation, light exercises, a good sleep or a digital detox for a period of time can be beneficial for your mental wellbeing. Explore your unaddressed issues and internal pain, pressures or tension. This can help you to cope better with your emotions. Besides that, it is a good idea to set up a daily plan to ensure a productive day that can enhance how you feel about your day. Set a daily wake-up and bed time, plan your meals ahead and more importantly, take breaks when you feel overwhelmed or tired.   A Healthy Food Regimen Now is a good time to learn new healthy recipes and rethink your relationship with food. If you are cooking at home more often now, include whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and lean meats. It’s time to focus on getting the fullness from the taste rather than quantity.  What could be more difficult is controlling your portions. It’s so easy to indulge in excessive amounts at home since you have nothing else to do. Take these steps: When you are hungry, try drinking a big glass of water before you eat. Then wait for 15 minutes to see if you’re still hungry. This can help to ‘fill up’ your tummy a bit. Eat proteins first as they make you feel fuller. Avoid too many carbohydrates that can cause swings in blood sugar. Avoid snacking with unhealthy foods that are high in sugar.  Try to slot in exercises in between your daily routines, such as in the afternoon or in the evening after work. Shift your activities to distract yourself from unproductive activities that can lead to snacking. Shop carefully and responsibly. If you know you will eat a whole package of biscuits in one sitting, then don’t buy it. If you don’t have it in your kitchen, you won’t eat it.   Regular Exercises Just because you are physically distancing from the gym, it does not mean you should stop exercising. Cleaning the house, a simple jog up and down the house can help you get it going as well. Plus, online workout class is abundant online. You just have to schedule regular daily exercise sessions and stick to it. Furthermore, it boosts your immune system and improves your mood.   Good Night's Sleep What is more important is getting enough rest. If you want a high quality sleep, stop staring at screens at least 1 hour before bed. Schedule a daily wake-up time and bedtime, and stick to it. Allow your body to recover and balance out your hormones so that it could function better.   You Can Do It! A lot of people fail at weight loss, but a lot of people win against it too. Believe in your own journey and ensure that you take care of your health in the process. It’s a tough time to live in currently, but it also means a good time to make the best of what’s already available. Strive to attain your goals and remember that you can definitely do it!
