A Guide to Lip Fillers

Even though lip augmentation isn’t permanent, it is popular amongst young women because it helps add volume, shape and structure to lips. It creates plumper lips that look sexy and healthy and it does this with the help of hyaluronic acid fillers. Hyaluronic acid fillers are being marketed under various names such as Restylane, Juvederm, Belotero and others. Whatever the name, they are all made up of hyaluronic acid, which is naturally found in the human body. Since Hyaluronic acid is natural to the human body, allergy risk is non-existent and highly unlikely (unless you are allergic to Hyaluronic acid).

Why inject HA acid into my lips?

Women have Hyaluronic acid injected into their lips for the sake of beauty---for the sake of looking youthful and attractive.

Juvederm, Restylane, Belotero---How do they differ?

Let’s first talk about Restylane and Juvederm, as they are very commonly used by professionals. Whilst both of them might require touching up after 6-9 months, Juvederm is known for being able to carry out mild plumping of the lips. In addition, Juvederm costs more, presumably because it lasts a little longer than Restylane.

Here are the key differences, summed up:

Restylane (Silk): Results last anywhere from 6-12 months. Used to define the lip line (s).

Juvederm (Volbella): Results tend to last for up to 12 months. Used to remove or smoothen small and also deeper lip lines and wrinkles. Juvederm is able to provide a softer and milder plumped-lip appearance than Restylane, which is great for those who prefer to have a slight change in lip structure. Some versions of Juvederm can last up to 2 years.

Belotero: Results tend to last anywhere from 6-12 months. Used to smoothen lip lines that are finer/smaller than Juvederm would be able to do, hence suitable for those with lip lines that are not severe.

What are the positive aspects of lip fillers?

Besides providing immediate results, a lip filler procedure tends to last 15-30 minutes. There is no downtime and for a quick procedure, results last for about 6 months (that’s only 2 touch-up sessions a year, excluding your first session).

Is there any reason I should not get a lip filler?

Just like any injection-based procedure, risks will always be attached. Bruising, swelling, infection---are all a possibility. However, if you are in the hands of a highly-qualified plastic surgeon, dermatologist or cosmetic facial surgeon (all with medical training), chances of developing the aforementioned side effects are virtually none. Because of this, the only reason you should not get a lip filler is if you suffer from cold sores, bleeding disorders, skin conditions such as rosacea, psoriasis and eczema and if you do not have the money for it. Lip filler procedures can be quite expensive, at about USD 500-2000 per session. But then again, how many times in 1 year are touch-up sessions necessary?

What should I do before a lip filler procedure?

Avoid blood thinners (aspirin, fish oil etc) for at least 1 day before, as this helps to decrease bruising post-procedure. Tell the plastic surgeon or doctor about your medical history---whether you’ve had oral herpes (cold sore), whether you are allergic to Lidocaine, whether you have a bleeding disorder, whether you have an inflammatory skin condition, etc.

How do I take care of my lips after the procedure?

The keyword is “gentle”. From eating to moving to sleeping, remain gentle.  Avoid hot and spicy foods for a while and opt for oatmeal and yoghurt instead. Stay away from any form of strenuous physical activity that can lead to excessive blood flow to the lips. Don’t sleep with your face in direct contact with your pillow or bed sheet. All this should be observed until the swelling stops.
