What is 3D Cerebral Angiography?

Cerebral Angiography or sometimes known as intra-arterial digital subtraction angiography (IADSA) is a minimally invasive medical test that uses X-Rays and an iodine-containing contrast material to produce high-quality 3D and CT image of blood vessels in the brain.

How It Works

In this procedure, a thin plastic tube or known as a catheter is inserted into your artery in the leg or arm through a small incision in your skin. Using X-Ray guidance, the catheter is navigated to the area being examined. Once there, contrast material is injected through the tube, and images are captured using ionizing radiation. It is suitable to diagnose and treat vascular diseases in the head, thorax, abdomen, hands, feet, and cardiovascular.

3D Cerebral Angiography Procedure

1. You will be administered a sedative or general anesthesia.
2. Heart rate and blood pressure devices will be attached to your body.
3. Your head will be held in place so that you cannot move it during the procedure.
4. A very small skin incision will be made at the site.
5. A catheter is inserted using X-Ray guidance into your blood vessel.
6. Contrast material is injected via the catheter.
7. Several sets of X-Rays will be taken upon examination of contrast materials in blood vessels.
8. The catheter will be removed and a tiny opening will be covered with a dressing.

Advantages and Limitations of 3D Cerebral Angiography

<Advantages>
· Minimally Invasive
· Eliminates the need for surgery
· Accurate results
· Diagnosis and treatment combined in a single procedure
· No radiation remains

<Limitations>
· A very slight risk of an allergic reaction to contrast material
· A small and rare risk to a blood clot or stroke if the catheter dislodged plaque from a vessel wall

3D Cerebral Angiography Preparation

· Inform your doctor all the medications you take, including herbal supplements
· You doctor may tell you to stop taking anti-inflammatory and blood-thinning medications
· Inform your doctor about recent illnesses or other medical conditions
· Fasting for at least 4 to 8 will be required prior to the checkup

FAQ

Q1: Will it be painful?
A1: You may feel sore and experience bruising where the catheter is inserted for about 1 to 2 days after the procedure.

Q2: Will I be able to resume normal daily routine?
A2: Light activities around the house is possible. However, any strenuous activities is highly restricted for 3 to 4 days.

Q3: Will I be awake throughout the procedure?
A3: Generally during a cerebral angiogram, you will be awake but sedated to help you relax.

Q4: Is it safe for me?
A4: If you are breastfeeding, you must only resume breastfeeding routine 24 hours after procedure. If you have impaired kidney function or have previously had allergic reactions to iodine-containing X-Ray contrast materials, then you are not a good candidate for this.

Q5: I am pregnant, will it be okay for my baby?
A5: You must always inform our affiliated doctor if there is any possibility that you are pregnant. If it is really necessary to do the test, precautions will be taken to minimize radiation exposure to your fetus.
