What is Egg Freezing?
Also known as oocyte preservation, egg freezing gives women the option of oocyte freezing and storage. In other words, egg freezing allows women to preserve their own fertility. This may be a viable option for women concerned about their advancing age and its effect on their reproductive potential or for women facing premature loss of their ovaries/ovarian function. The harvesting and cryopreservation of eggs may also be considered by women dealing with cervical, endometrial and breast cancer, as well as those facing systemic chemotherapy or other therapies thought to be a threat to reproductive potential.
How it Works
When a woman is deemed to be a good candidate to produce a sufficient quantity of eggs for cryopreservation, her ovaries can be stimulated with injectable fertility medications in a similar manner to that utilized for assisted reproduction procedures. Ovarian follicle development is monitored with the ultrasound measurement of ovarian follicles and estradiol levels. When the follicles are mature, HCG is administered to complete the maturation process. The eggs are harvested 36 hours thereafter with the use of ultrasound-guided transvaginal aspiration. Mature oocytes are then cryopreserved and stored. Later on, when the woman wants to use her cryopreserved oocytes, they are thawed, and those which survive are fertilized through ICSI.

FAQ
Q1: What are some side effects after my Egg Freezing procedure?
A1: Egg retrieval is a part of the egg freezing procedure. After your eggs have been retrieved, you may experience some soreness in the vaginal area, some abdominal cramping or some spotting, which could last a few days. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as Tylenol will help. Most women feel normal by the next day.
