What Are Keloids?
Keloids are the extra scar tissues that grow when the skin is injured, to protect the injury. They are much larger compared to the original wound size. Keloids are not harmful but may create cosmetic concern for people. Skin injury that can contribute to keloids is acne scars, burns, chickenpox scars, ear piercing, scratches, surgical incision sites, vaccination sites, etc.
How It Works
At our affiliated hospital, keloids are treated by steroid injections. Keloids can be improved by injecting steroids directly into the scars to make the scars less visible. Steroid injection will reduce the bulge by breaking the bonds between collagen fibers - the cause of the scars. This will reduce the amount of scar tissue beneath the skin.
A recommended treatment for keloids is to get the injection every 4 to 6 weeks, limiting the total number of injections to 5. In the hours after injection, you will be able to improve the effectiveness of the injections to break up the scar tissue by yourself using gentle massage on the scars.
Keloids vs. Hypertrophic Scars
Keloids are sometimes confused with another more common type of scar called hypertrophic scars. Hypertrophic scars are smaller and flatter scars that can range from pink to brown in color.
Hypertrophic scars are commonly caused by different forms of physical as well as chemical injuries, such as piercings or harsh fragrances. These can also be treated with keloid injection.
