What is Cataract Surgery?

Cataract is a common eye problem in older people and refers to the clouding of the lens inside the eye. It can cause irreversible vision loss that cannot be corrected using glasses, lenses and not even LASIK.

Cataract surgery is a procedure to remove the lens of your eye and in most cases, have it replaced with an artificial lens.

Cataract Surgery Procedure

1. A small incision will be made in the front surface of the eye with a scalpel or a laser.
2. A circular hole will then be cut in the front of the thin membrane (anterior capsule) that encloses the eye's natural lens.
3. Typically the lens will be broken into smaller pieces with a laser or an ultrasonic device so it can be easily removed from the eye.
4. Once the entire lens are removed, it will be replaced with a clear implant called an intraocular lens (IOL) to restore vision. In most cases, the eye heals quickly after surgery without stitches.

FAQ

Q1: Is it true that cataracts only happens to older people?
A1: Cataracts tends to develop slowly over time and especially affects those over 50 years old. In rare cases, however, infants can develop congenital cataracts. These are usually associated to the mother having German measles, chickenpox or other infectious disease during pregnancy.

Q2: My grandmother had cataract surgery years ago and she had to wear thick glasses afterward. Is this still necessary nowadays?
A2: Nowadays, most modern cataract procedures replace your eye's natural lens with IOL, intraocular lens to correct your distance vision to 20/20 without the need for any glasses or lenses.

Q3: Will I be put to sleep during the surgery?
A3: No, usually you are awake during the surgery. This eliminates all risks associated with general anaesthesia and at the same time enables your surgeon to communicate with you during the procedure. However, if the idea of being awake scares you, you can be given oral medication to ease your discomfort.

Q4: Why might there be a need for secondary surgery?
A4: If the doctor who performs the cataract surgery is unskilled and unprofessional, fragments of the Cataractous lens may be left inside, which leads to the need for a secondary surgery.
