What is Epicanthoplasty?
While Double Eyelid Surgery creates a crease above the eye, Epicanthoplasty elongates the eyes to make them look bigger and wider. This is achieved by removing and correcting an epicanthal or Mongolian fold, which is located either on the inner or outer corner of the eyes. This procedure is often recommended in conjunction with double eyelid surgery for optimal results.
Types of Epicanthoplasty
3 types of epicanthoplasty are offered:
· Medial Epicanthoplasty
Skin at the inner corner of the eyes will be cut to reveal bigger eyes. The surgical scar will be hidden in the inner corner of the eye and eyelashes of the lower eyelid.
· Lateral Epicanthoplasty
This is suitable for those with wider eyes. An incision will be made at the outer corner of the lower lashline to reveal bigger part of the eye. This method has an opening effect of about 3 to 5 mm.
· Lateral Epicanthoplasty + Eye Corner Lowering Surgery
An incision will be made at the outer corner of the lower lashline to reveal bigger part of the eye. Then, the muscles under the lower eyelid will be pulled so that the lower lashline will have a more curved line that can make the eyes look bigger.
How It Works
Although all 3 types of epicanthoplasty are able to increase the size of your eyes, there are minor differences between them:
· Medial epicanthoplasty focuses on cutting and removing the Mongolian fold and redraping skin.
· Lateral epicanthoplasty focuses on reshaping the lateral epicanthus and achieving an elongated eye corner (outer eye).
· The Lateral Epicanthoplasty and Eye Corner Lowering Surgery combination focuses on expanding the eye corner by bringing down the lower eyelid, thereby helping to achieve an elongated and downward-slanted eye corner.
