What is Hysterectomy?

A hysterectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the uterus, or the womb. The uterus is where a baby grows if you are pregnant. Once hysterectomy is done, you will not be able to get pregnant. Hysterectomy may be total or partial. A total hysterectomy (complete hysterectomy) involves removing the body, fundus and cervix of the uterus. Meanwhile, a partial hysterectomy (supracervical hysterectomy) is the removal of the uterine body while leaving the cervix intact.

How It Works

Our affiliated doctor will examine your condition to determine the type of hysterectomy procedure suitable for you. Before finalizing the surgery, your uterus will also be checked for any abnormalities or adherence. Hysterectomy can be done through 2 types of incisions, a vertical incision which starts from the middle of your abdomen to below your navel, or a horizontal bikini-line incision, which lies about an inch above your pubic bone. The type of incision suitable for you will be determined by the doctor.

Hysterectomy Procedure

1. General Anesthesia or Regional Blockage with IV sedation will be administered.
2. A urinary catheter will be passed through the urethra to empty the bladder.
3. Abdomen and vagina will be cleaned with a sterile solution.
4. Incision will be made in the lower abdomen.
5. Removal of the womb will be done and the incision will be closed.
6. End of procedure.

FAQ

Q1: Can I get a Hysterectomy if I am under 40?
A1: Yes, but an additional psychological evaluation is required to make sure you understand that getting this procedure means you would be unable to become pregnant, and other changes can also happen to your body. This review is necessary to provide you with the best treatment.

Q2: How long would I need to fully recover?
A2: You may need 6 to 8 weeks to fully recover. In terms of work, some patients may only need 2-week leave from work while some may need more. This depends on the type of job you have so please get a consultation with the doctor to determine how long you should rest.

Q3: Can I freeze eggs before Hysterectomy?
A3: If you are still ovulating, yes. This would require an IVF treatment. If you want to learn more about this, our affiliated case manager can explain more.

Q4: Do I need to come back for a follow-up consultation?
A4: If you live nearby to the hospital, you may come again 1 week after surgery for a follow-up. Otherwise, follow-up can be done online.

Q5: How do I know if I am having a complication or infection?
A5: Cases of infections are rare, but the first symptom would be fever, vomiting or forming of dark/purplish color at the incision site. Extreme vaginal or incision bleeding is also not normal.
