What is LASIK?
LASIK is an acronym that stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis.
It is known to be the best known and most commonly performed type of refractive surgery worldwide. Like other types of refractive surgery, LASIK also reshapes the cornea to enable light to enter the eye and focus onto retina for clearer vision.
Results are immediate and usually continue to improve and stabilize over a few days.
Our affiliated eye center uses Fourth Generation Wave-front LASIK (NIDEK EC-5000 Cx II) for myopia (short-sightedness) and astigmatism (Blurred Vision).
What is PRK (Photo Refractive Keratectomy)?
PRK is a type of refractive surgery performed to correct myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism.
PRK was known as the first type of laser eye surgery for vision correction and it is the predecessor to the popular LASIK procedure. Although PRK has longer recovery period than LASIK eye surgery, PRK is still commonly performed and offers advantages over LASIK for some patients.
Like LASIK and other types of laser eye surgery, PRK works by reshaping the cornea using an excimer laser, allowing light entering the eye to be properly focused onto the retina for the clear vision effect.
The main difference between PRK and LASIK is that in LASIK, a thin flap is created on the cornea with a microkeratome or a femtosecond laser and this flap is lifted to expose the underlying corneal tissue and is replaced after the cornea is reshaped with an excimer laser; whereas in PRK, the thin outer layer of the cornea (epithelium) would be removed and discarded prior to the reshaping of underlying corneal tissue with an excimer laser. The epithelium repairs itself (grows back over the corneal surface) within a few days after surgery.
SBK vs. LASIK
· The ophthalmologist uses a femtosecond laser to create a thinner corneal flap than those found in LASIK procedures. LASIK flaps tend to be between 120 to 160 microns thick, whereas SBK flaps are only 110 microns thick.
· The created flap is smaller in diameter than a typical LASIK flap, which minimizes damage to corneal nerve endings. Nerve damage is a probable cause of the post-operative dry eye in LASIK patients.
In summary, SBK attempts to retain the high success rate of LASIK procedures while offering patients a more comfortable post-operative period.
How It Works
LASIK uses an instrument called a microkeratome or femtosecond laser which is used to create a thin flap in the cornea.
The cornea flap is then painlessly peeled back and the underlying corneal tissue is reshaped using another laser. After the cornea is reshaped so that it can properly focus light onto the retina, the corneal flap is put back in place and the surgery is complete.
LASIK is performed under local anesthesia in the form of eye drops (no shots, no needles) and usually takes about 10 minutes to complete. Patients may also request mild sedation for further numbness just in case.
After the surgery, it is recommended for patients to not drive home by themselves.
