What is Brain Tumor Surgery?
Surgery is a common method to remove brain tumors apart from radiation therapy and chemotherapy. In the procedure, the doctor will remove the entire tumor if possible. If it’s not possible to do so, partial removal can also help to relieve symptoms by reducing pressure on the brain and reduce the amount of tumor for further treatments such as radiation therapy or chemotherapy. Brain surgery is a major surgery and is not suitable for everyone as you need to be well overall. Your doctor can help to determine if you can go for the surgery.
Types of Brain Tumor Surgery
· Craniotomy
Craniotomy is the most common type of brain tumor surgery. It is done under general anesthetic and involves cutting an area of bone from the skull. After tumor removal, the bone will be secure with small metal brackets.
· Neuroendoscopy
This procedure is also known as keyhole brain surgery. It is done to remove all or part of a tumor in the fluid filled spaces of the brain (ventricles). In the procedure, a small hole will be made on the skull called a Burr hole to insert an endoscope with tiny forceps and scissors attached at the end of the endoscope to remove the tumor.

FAQ
Q1: Under what conditions are surgery really necessary?
A1: The doctor may suggest surgery if your tumor is large, or if it’s small and located in an easily accessible area, the tumor is aggressive or if you are a good surgical candidate. Your doctor can help to determine this.
Q2: Does the tumor have a chance of recurring?
A2: When a tumor is completely removed through surgery, it has a reduced chance of recurring, although this may depend on the type of brain tumor and if it can be removed entirely.
Q3: Will I be in a lot of pain after surgery?
A3: Since there are a small number of pain nerve endings in the head, pain is usually minimal. However, you may experience headaches. This can be treated with medications, or narcotic medications like Percocet or Morphine. The medication will be administered through IV until you can tolerate taking pills.
Q4: When can I start my regular exercise?
A4: You should take at least 4 weeks rest from any strenuous activities, and may resume your routine once the doctor has cleared you to do so.
Q5: When should I contact the doctor after the procedure?
A5: If you have high fever, any weakness in arms or legs, seizure, worsening headaches or other symptoms of concern, contact your doctor immediately.
