What is a Porcelain Veneer?
Sometimes called dental veneers, porcelain veneers are wafer-thin custom-made shells of tooth-colored materials that are designed to cover the front part of the teeth.
Veneers help improve the appearance of your teeth. Bonded to the front of the teeth, veneers improve appearance by changing their color, shape, size, or length. In addition, veneers can be made from porcelain or resin composite materials.
Porcelain Veneer Vs Composite Veneer
There are 2 types of Veneers.
· Porcelain Veneers
· Composite Veneers
The differences are:
<Porcelain veneers>
· are stronger (porcelain is stronger than composite resin)
· last longer
· are more natural-looking (looks like real teeth) and aesthetically pleasing
Porcelain Veneer Procedure
1. If the dentist agrees that a dental veneer is appropriate for your teeth.
2. About 1/2 mm of your tooth enamel will be removed from the tooth surface.
3. Impressions of your tooth/teeth will be made.
4. The prepared veneer (takes 2 - 4 weeks) will be temporarily placed on your tooth and will be trimmed as needed in order to achieve a proper fit. Veneer color can also be adjusted at this stage.
5. The veneer will be removed for cleaning and polishing to take place. Etching will also be performed to help roughen the tooth up to help the bonding process between your tooth and the veneer.
6. A special cement will then be applied to the veneer and the veneer is finally placed on your tooth. A special light beam will be directed onto the dental veneer which activates chemicals in the cement, causing the cement to harden quickly.
7. Any excess cement will be trimmed off.
Advantages and Limitations of Porcelain Veneers
<Advantages>
· Strong resistance towards stains (compared to resin veneers)
· Natural tooth appearance (reflects light like natural teeth)
· Less shaping required (compared to dental crowns)
· Stronger and more aesthetically pleasing than crowns
· Does not affect gum tissue
· Can make dark teeth appear whiter
<Limitations>
· Veneer removal is not possible.
· The removal of enamel may cause you to be more sensitive to hot and cold foods
· May dislodge / fall off if you like putting excessive pressure on your nails (nail biting, ice-chewing etc)
· Not a good choice for those with unhealthy teeth
· Not suitable for those who like to clench and grind teeth
FAQ
Q1: Can I whiten/bleach my teeth after getting a porcelain veneer?
A1: Although doing so is possible, it is best to whiten your teeth before getting veneers, as there is a chance that the veneer will not exactly match the color of other teeth if whitening is done after the veneer procedure.
Q2: How long do veneers last?
A2: With proper care, veneers or crowns should last for approximately 10 years.
Q3: Should I have a veneer or a crown?
A3: Veneers are considered a more conservative treatment than crowns. Less of the tooth needs to be removed in order to place a veneer. Therefore, it depends on the situation you are facing.
Q4: How do I know Veneer will look good on me?
A4: A digital smile preview can be made by taking a picture of your face and digitally editing the teeth.
Q5: Should I choose porcelain or composite veneer?
A5: If the problem is minor and teeth are functioning properly, cosmetic bonding is appropriate. Otherwise, porcelain would suit you best. Since the treatment price is inclusive of consultation fee, please consult with Our Affiliated Dentist to determine which option is best for you.
