What is Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening involves bleaching the teeth using certified chemicals that decompose pigments in the teeth, which results in natural whiteness. With safe teeth whitening procedures performed by professionals, stained or discolored teeth caused by multiple factors such as foods, drinks, tobacco use, poor dental hygiene, trauma, and others, can be brightened in just 1 procedure.

Zoom Whitening at Our Affiliated Clinic

Zoom is a widely used bleaching process ro lighten discoloration of enamel and dentin. The procedure uses the Zoom Advanced Power Chairside Lamp to activate 25% hydrogen peroxide whitening, accelerating the bleaching process. As hydrogen peroxide is broken down, oxygen enters the enamel and dentin to bleach a stained surface, leaving the structure of the tooth unchanged and undamaged.

Compared to other teeth whitening procedures, the light used for the Zoom whitening process filters out infrared emissions to limit the extra heat your teeth are exposed to. This is an advantage over laser teeth whitening, which can overheat teeth. Zoom whitening works best on yellow or brown staining, but not so satisfying for grey staining. The light can also target the entire mouth at once, which reduces treatment time.

At our affiliated clinic, a Full-Mouth Zoom Whitening treatment is available. For a full-mouth treatment, all the teeth will be whitened, except on crown or veneer.

How It Works

During the treatment, a whitening gel will be applied to the surface of your teeth. The main component of the whitening gel is adjusted urea peroxide and hydrogen peroxide, which are used in oxydol (disinfectant). These contain an active whitening ingredient that penetrates your enamel in order to get to pigments, which are essentially discolored molecules. Oxygen molecules in the gel react with the discolored molecules in your teeth, decomposing the pigments and whitening your teeth.

Zoom Whitening Aftercare

If you have opted to get home bleaching touch-up kit, please follow dentist's instructions on how and when to use the kit. Other measures to avoid staining the teeth include:
· Consume tea, coffee, red wine, cola etc. in moderation
· It is highly recommended to stop any tobacco products
· Maintain an appropriate oral hygiene (brushing and flossing) regimen to prevent stains from reforming
· Go for regular dental check-ups
· Opt for toothpastes that have whitening agents

What’s The Difference Between Cleaning And Whitening?

Teeth cleaning refers to the cleaning of teeth by a professional, with the aim of removing stains caused by coffee, red wine and tea. Getting your teeth cleaned during dental check-ups can avoid periodontal disease.
On the other hand, teeth whitening refers to the process in which the color of teeth is made whiter. It involves the removal of stains and pigments with the use of certified chemicals.

FAQ

Q1: Can teeth whitening improve the color of a veneer?
A1: No. At our affiliated clinic, full-mouth teeth whitening is performed on all teeth provided there is no crown or veneer.

Q2: Is the result of teeth whitening permanent?
A2: No, it is not. People who expose their teeth to a lot of foods and beverages that cause staining may see the whiteness start to fade in as quick as 1 month. Those who avoid foods and beverages that stain may be able to wait 1 year or longer before another whitening treatment or touch-up is needed.

Q3: Are there any risks associated with teeth whitening?
A3: The 2 side effects that occur most often are a temporary increase in tooth sensitivity and mild irritation of the soft tissues of the mouth, particularly the gums. Tooth sensitivity often occur during early stages of the bleaching treatment. Tissue irritation most commonly results from an ill-fitting mouthpiece tray rather than the tooth-bleaching agent. Both conditions are temporary and disappear within 1 to 3 days of treatment.

Q4: My friend said that whitening can damage tooth enamel, is that true?
A4: Studies of whitening products using 10% carbamide peroxide showed little to no effect on the hardness or mineral content of a tooth’s enamel surface.
