What is Dental Implant?

Dental implants are replacement tooth roots. Implants provide a strong foundation for fixed replacement teeth that are made to match your natural teeth. Typically, the dental implant procedure is performed on those who have lost a tooth or several teeth due to injury, tooth decay or periodontal disease (gum or bone infection). In short, dental implants can replace missing teeth with a more natural look and feel compared to dentures and other types of dental restorations.

What is Dental Crown?

A crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is placed over a tooth to restore natural tooth function as well as to improve the appearance of your teeth.

Type of Dental Implants

<Conventional Implants>
· Applicable to replace one, multiple or all missing teeth with permanent restoration.
· Done in 2 stages - 2 to 6 months gap in between
· May be done for most types of bone conditions.

<Immediate Implants>
· Also known as One day implants - place implant immediately after teeth extracted
· Recommended only for people with good jaw bones conditions

<Immediate Load Implants>
· Place crowns, bridges or dentures immediately after implants are embedded in the jaws
· Often follow after conventional or immediate
· Recommended only for people with good jaw bones conditions

Types of Dental Implants Restoration

<Single Tooth Implant>
· Consists 3 parts - implant, abutment and crown.
· One of the best permanent restorations - looks and works like a natural tooth
· Used for single tooth missing or multiple tooth missing

<All-on-4 or All-on-6>
· Full arch tooth replacement with 4 or 6 implants
· Usually used when all teeth are missing
· Results in immediate function and improved stability

Types of Dental Crowns

<3M Lava All Ceramics>
Using unique 3M technology, these dental crowns can help to maintain translucency after shading without compromising strength. It is one of the strongest all-ceramic restorations available today. The crowns and bridges also have 8 shades for natural shade matching. Since they are produced on a zirconium-oxide glass-free polycrystalline base, they offer great strength and marginal fits suitable for both anterior and posterior applications.

<All Ceramix eMax>
This type of dental crown has gained a reputation for producing long-lasting, natural-looking results and maintaining high quality standards. eMax has a balance of versatility and simplicity, and enables various fabrication techniques with pleasing aesthetics. It is made of cementable material, but has great strength for metal-free restoration.

<Cercon Smart Ceramics>
Cercon Smart Ceramic is a porcelain-type dental crown by DeguDent. Its material is strong, fracture resistant, has great aesthetics and is biocompatible.

<Porcelain Fused to Metal>

FAQ

Q1: What is the difference between a bridge and a crown?
A1: Bridge use surrounding teeth to help fill gap of a missing tooth. Crown is used to restore existing tooth back to its natural appearance.

Q2: How long will my crown last for?
A2: Depending upon the level of care and hygiene, it may last up to 10 - 15 years.

Q3: Will I have trouble eating with a crown?
A3: Eating should be made easier with a dental crown as it increases your ability to chew. We suggest you start with a small bite of soft food to help you adjust the feel of your tooth.

Q4: Will dental crowns impact my speech?
A4: Your speech should improve as the teeth and tongue work together to help you articulate.

Q5: Can my dental crown become chipped over time?
A5: Since dental crowns are usually made of porcelain, chipping may occur. Luckily, it is possible to repair small chips without removing the crown. Larger chips may require a complete replacement.

Q6: I have a lot of missing teeth, what will happen if I do not undergo a Dental Implant procedure?
A6: Your jawbone will experience a lack of stimulation and might start to shrink. This may result in a premature aging appearance.

Q7: Is the dental implant procedure painful?
A7: Many say that having a tooth extracted is more painful. However, incisions must be made at the gums, which is why anesthesia is used.

Q8: Are there alternatives to dental implants?
A8: An alternative may be a dental bridge, which can also be used to replace missing teeth. If you currently have a denture, adjusting it for a better fit may help.

Q9: Are follow-ups necessary?
A9: Yes. Since it will take several months for your jawbone to fuse with the implants, you will need multiple follow-up visits with your surgeon. This is to observe how well your jaw is healing. Overall, this procedure will require you to stay at least 2 weeks for the first stage, which is the implant surgery. Generally, 4 to 6 months after, you need to come back for the final crown or capping, which will take 3 weeks to finish.
