What is Dialysis?

When your own kidneys can no longer take care of your body's needs, dialysis must be carried out. Those with kidney failure need dialysis to help their bodies remove waste, salt and extra water. They also need dialysis in order to maintain a safe level of certain substances in their blood (such as potassium, sodium and bicarbonate). Dialysis also helps to control blood pressure, as high blood pressure can further weaken the kidney.

What Happens During Hemodialysis?

During the procedure, your blood will go through a filter called the ‘dialyzer’, also known as the ‘artificial kidney’. To put it simply, the filter machine helps to do what the kidneys are supposed to do.

To start the treatment, two needles that are connected to the dialysis machine will be placed into your arm.

In the process, the machine will pump blood through the filter, and return the blood back to your body. The machine will also monitor your blood pressure to control the blood flow through the filter, and how quickly fluid is removed from your body.

FAQ

Q1: Should I book my holiday tours or my dialysis sessions first?
A1: Please organize your plans for dialysis before you book the rest of your holiday to ensure a safe and comfortable traveling experience.

Q2: Is there anything else I should prepare before I leave for dialysis in Bali?
A2: Please obtain a letter from your doctor (which declares that you are fit to fly and travel). At the same time, get your doctor's advice on any medication that will be necessary for your travel (a prescription would be useful to have while travelling). Furthermore, ensure that your hepatitis A, typhoid, diphtheria, and tetanus vaccinations are up to date. Last but not least, be sure to bring along all your medications with you and perhaps an extra supply of 2-4 days of medication in case of delays.

Q3: Is there anything I should be concerned about while traveling with kidney problems?
A3: Please take care of your diet and lighten up on protein, avoid salt and too much phosphorus. Follow your doctor's advice regarding lifestyle and health needs.
