What is Intrabeam IORT?
IORT, or Intraoperative Radiotherapy is an advanced procedure where a single dose radiotherapy is delivered directly to the tissues surrounding the cancer during lumpectomy, after the cancer removal. This technique reduces radiation exposure as well as treatment time.
Intrabeam IORT Procedure
1. Deliver Intrabeam during surgery:
Once the tumor is removed by the surgeon, the Intrabeam Applicator will be precisely placed into the lumpectomy incision.
2. Deliver radiation:
A low energy, high dose of radiation will be delivered locally to the cancer site, reducing exposure to healthy tissues.
3. End of treatment:
After 20 - 30 mins of radiation delivery, the applicator will be removed and the incision will be closed by the surgeon and the patient will be sent to recovery room.

· In the event where external beam has to be given out after IORT, instead of the standard 23 sessions of the whole breast external radiotherapy, only 15 sessions will be required.

FAQ
Q1: Can the tumor grow back?
A1: Yes, there is always a risk of cancer relapse even if a mastectomy is performed. According to studies, there is a similar chance of 2 to 5% after 5 years after treatment for the tumor to grow back.
Q2: Is it possible to have seroma after treatment?
A2: Side effects for this treatment is similar to that of ERBT. Seroma is one of the possible mild side effects. But this can be treated by leaving it alone or using a needle to drain the fluid.
Q3: How do I know if Intrabeam IORT is right for me?
A3: This treatment is suitable for all patients undergoing lumpectomy.
