What is a Night Guard?

A night guard is also known as a dental guard, mouth guard, nocturnal bite plates, or bite splints. It acts as a barrier between your teeth to prevent clenching that can be destructive to the teeth.

Teeth grinding and clenching are also known as bruxism, which are caused by stress, sleep disorders, a misaligned bite, acid reflux or as a side effect of some medications. Smoking and drinking alcohol can also be the factors. Teeth grinding that occurs occasionally may not cause any concern, but consistent bruxism can be damaging. It can cause broken teeth, loss of tooth enamel, and in severe cases, loss of teeth.

Meanwhile, TMJ problems can also be controlled with a night guard. TMJ problems can stem from arthritis, misaligned teeth or jaw injuries, muscle tension and stress. Symptoms of TMJ include discomfort while chewing or moving your jaw and a limited ability to open your mouth, among others. Pain and headaches usually occur due to TMJ issues.

The type of night guard suitable for you can be determined by the dentist, taking into consideration your condition, issues and the best solution for your dental health.

How It Works

A night guard puts a barrier between your teeth so that when you bite or grind, the night guard cushions the teeth and jaw muscles. This reduces tension and prevents face and jaw pain. In the long term, it can be beneficial in protecting the enamel of your teeth.

Treatment Procedure

1. During the first visit, consultation will be done and the dental impression of your teeth will be taken.
2. A model will be made based on the impression. This model will be sent to the laboratory to fabricate the actual mouth guard.
3. When your mouth guard is ready (after a few days), your mouth guard will be fitted and necessary adjustments will be made.
