What is Hip Replacement Surgery?

Hip replacement surgery is a procedure in which the hip joint is replaced by a prosthetic implant. This surgery is usually conducted to relieve arthritis pain or fix severe physical joint damage as part of the treatment for hip fracture. Hip replacement surgery can be performed as a total replacement or a hemi (half) replacement.

How It Works

<Partial Hip Replacement>
In this procedure, only 1 side of the hip joint (the femoral head) is replaced instead of both sides. This is commonly done for older patients who have fractured their hip.

<Total Hip Replacement>
In this surgery, damaged sections are replaced with artificial implants. The socket is replaced with a durable plastic cup and the femoral head is replaced with a ball made from ceramic or metal alloy. The new ball is also attached to a metal stem that is inserted into the top of the femur.

In order to ensure a smooth procedure, these steps will be taken for patients’ safety and comfort:

· Before getting an approval for the surgery, you will need to fill out a medical intake form. Your case manager will assist you regarding this step. An X-ray of your hip may also be requested.

· You will be requested to get a dental check-up to check for any infections and/or cavities. This is to avoid post-op infections.

· Pre-Op testing will include CBC test, EKG test, thorax X-ray as well as a 1 hr consultation.

· It is recommended that you get a pre-approval for surgery from your local doctor prior to your arrival to ensure that you are fit enough for surgery. However, if you wish to perform all Pre-Op tests upon arrival to the hospital, that can also be done. Your case manager can assist you.

FAQ

Q1: Can I have both hips replaced at the same time?
A1: Yes, if you are under 75 years old with no history of cardiopulmonary disease, you may be able to have both hips replaced at once. In some cases, however, it may be better to stage the surgeries.

Q2: How soon after surgery can I resume driving?
A2: Most patients can resume driving after 6 weeks post-surgery, or after the doctor has cleared you to do so.

Q3: How long would a hip replacement implant last?
A3: Generally speaking, it should remain effective for 10 to 20 years, or even longer. This varies according to type of implant and the age of the patient. When a hip implant needs to be replaced due to being loose or worn out, hip revision surgery would be needed.

Q4: When can I start doing light sports?
A4: Light sports, such as golf, doubles tennis and bowling can be played in about 12 weeks’ time after the procedure, once the doctor has approved for you to do those activities.

Q5: Will the pain go away after surgery?
A5: Your pain will improve. However, it should be remembered that a slight pain after surgery is normal and can last up to a few weeks. This pain will subside once the soft tissues from the surgery have healed.
