What are Iontophoresis and Phonophoresis?

Iontophoresis and Phonophoresis are procedures that can enhance drug penetration through the skin's outermost layers deep into the tissues. It is mainly useful for facial rejuvenation, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and facial brightening, among others.

<Iontophoresis>
A treatment that uses small electrically charged ions to deliver chemicals applied on the skin and through its layers.

<Phonophoresis>
A treatment that uses ultrasound to enhance the delivery of topically applied drugs or to enhance the absorption of topical agents.

How It Works

In iontophoresis treatment, a positively-charged (acid pH) serum, gel or complex is first applied to the skin before placing passive or inactive (negative) electrode under the patient’s shoulder or into their hand. Then the active ingredients is delivered deep into the skin via positively-charged ions or molecules. The electropulsion will carry the ingredients deep into the skin layers, where they can impact cells and cause improvements on the skin.

In phonophoresis, nutrients will be delivered via ultrasound. The resulting heat from the device will result in lymphatic drainage, which can increase absorption of drugs.

Iontophoresis and Phonophoresis Procedure

Iontophoresis:
1. Positively-charged gel will be applied onto the skin.
2. A negative electrode will be placed near the shoulder or held in hand.
3. A positively charged current will be passed through the skin, which helps push the active ingredients applied into the epidermal layers.

Phonophoresis:
1. A medicated ointment or gel will be applied on targeted area.
2. An ultrasound gel will be applied on top of the topical gel.
3. The medication will be delivered via wave frequencies using the ultrasound head tool.
