What is Sinus Lift?

Sinus Lift is a procedure performed when there is a teeth gap on the premolar and molar area of the upper jaw, to build a strong foundation for implants to fit in place without any future complications.

Sinus lift is a must to be done when your dental implants cannot be placed because you do not have enough bone height in the upper jaw, and also when your sinuses are too close to the jaw.

How It Works

Sinus Lift works by first moving the sinus membrane upward to make room for the bone to be added to your upper jaw. The procedure is required when implants are needed at the premolar and molar areas on the upper jaw, under the condition which you do not have enough bone height in the upper jaw or your sinuses are too close to the jaw.

Causes of Bone Loss on The Upper Jaw

· Bone loss from periodontal (gum) disease
· Lost teeth in your upper jaw, particularly your back teeth or molars
· Reabsorption of bone into the body due to tooth loss
· The maxillary sinus is too close to the upper jaw

Common Types of Bone Used

· Bone from your own body (autogenous bone)
· Bone from a cadaver (allogenic bone)
· Bone from a cow (xenograft)

Sinus Lift Procedure

1. Consultation and examination of teeth condition
2. X-rays taken to study the anatomy of your jaw and sinus; some may require a CT scan
3. Extraction of bone from your body (if autogenous bone preferred)
4. Application of local anesthesia
5. Gum tissue where your back teeth used to be may be cut
6. Raising of tissue, exposing the bone underneath
7. A small circle will be cut in the bone
8. Bony piece lift into the sinus cavity space and the hole will be filled with bone graft
9. Closing the incision with sutures
10. Implants will be placed 4 to 12 months after sinus lift surgery
