What is Implant Supported Overdenture?
An Implant Supported Overdenture is a type of denture that is secured in place by connecting it to dental implants that are embedded in the gums. This is suitable for those who are not suitable candidates for a fixed implant prosthesis, or for those who have lost a lot of teeth in which getting dental implants may not be the most feasible or affordable option.
Instead of having multiple dental implants performed on each tooth, an overdenture focuses on just 4 or 6 tilted implants as the main sites to attach the whole full arch false teeth. As the implant is made of titanium, it has the unique ability to fuse to the living bone and function normally as part of it. With this, the implants become part of the jawbone and serve as the strong and long-lasting foundation of the patient's new teeth.
A our affiliated clinic, the overdenture is a removable type, giving the advantage of being easy to clean.
How It Works
An overdenture does not need natural tooth/teeth to be supported, like a dental bridge. Instead, it is securely held in place by dental implants. The more dental implants you have, the more bone will remain in place, maintaining a strong jaw structure, youthful facial appearance and better oral health.
During the initial consultation, the dentist will examine the overall condition of the teeth and determine the suitable type of overdenture, distribution of implants and other considerations. Then, the implants will be placed and the jaw will be given some time for up to 6 months to heal around the implants. After that, when the overdenture is ready, patient may revisit the clinic to have the overdenture placed.
With the maintenance of good hygiene and regular checkups, an overdenture can last for up to 10 years or longer before having to replace it.

2. X-ray and CT scan will be performed to determine the suitable implants

FAQ
Q1: Will the implants be visible?
A1: No, the implants are in the gums to support the overdenture. When the overdenture is worn, the end result will look natural.
Q2: Will this technique result in bone loss?
A2: This technique helps to maintain the jaw structure, preventing more bone resorption.
Q3: How long can this last?
A3: It can last 10 years or longer, depending on the maintenance care.
Q4: When can I go back to work?
A4: A lot of patients can go back to work on the next day. Some may even go back to work on the same day after the procedure.
Q5: Is it better than false teeth?
A5: If wearing false teeth causes you to have sore gums, movement due to unstable bone structure, and pain during chewing, then implant supported overdentures can be a more tolerable and functional option.
