What is Preventive Dentistry?

Preventive Dentistry is a practice of caring for your teeth to maintain their health and have bright smiles; many teeth conditions can be avoided such as cavities, gum disease, enamel wear, etc.
At our affiliated clinic, there are treatment options available to help manage your oral hygiene as well as teeth appearance for the permanent perfect look.

How It Works

There are many forms of preventive dentistry that can be done on top of the general oral hygiene routine to ensure clean and strong teeth.

Treatments or accessories available at our affiliated clinic include:

· Topical Fluoride
· Fissure Sealants
· Preventive Resin Restoration
· Mouth / Night Guard
· Acrylic Splint
· Space Maintainer
· Occlusal Splint
· Occlusal Adjustment

Topical Fluoride

Fluoride is known to strengthen your enamels, the outer coating of your teeth, as it remineralizes and inhibits bacterial metabolism which reduces the growth of plaque on the teeth; this prevents tooth decay as well as cavities.

Fissure Sealants

Fissure Sealants are plastic coatings that are normally painted on the grooves of the back teeth to form protective layers; these prevent food and bacteria from getting stuck on the teeth which would cause tooth decay.

Preventive Resin Restoration

Known as PRR, Preventive Resin Restoration is a thin resin coating that would be applied to the chewing surface of molars, premolars, and any deep grooves (pits and fissures) of the teeth. The difference between PRR and sealants is that it lasts indefinitely, while sealants can last between 6 to 8 years.

Mouth / Night Guard

This is necessary for the ones who clench their jaw during sleep; night guard, also known as mouth guard, can help to lighten the tension and give cushion to the muscles in the jaw.

Acrylic Splint

Made of clear plastic, Acrylic Splint is used to ease muscle tension and stabilize the jaw; it works by fitting between and over the upper and lower teeth, this prevents grinding and clenching of the jaw (bruxism) which might cause pain.

Space Maintainer

Suitable for a child's mouth, as the purpose is to keep the space open for the permanent tooth to erupt and come into place later on.

Occlusal Splint

Our affiliated clinic uses Michigan-type occlusal splint, the purpose of it is to cover the biting surface of the teeth, which can help stop jaw pain, headaches and other symptoms associated with Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD). This is different from night guard as it holds your teeth together to prevent harmful movement, while night guard protects the teeth from sudden muscle tension.

Occlusal Adjustment

A type of modification done on the biting surfaces of the teeth to improve function or morphology. It is often used in conjunction with prosthetic placement to improve contact patterns.

FAQ

Q1: Who needs less or more frequent dental check up appointments?
A1: Generally, twice a year is enough for most people. But people with gum disease, plaque build-up, cavities, weakened immune system and/or trauma may need more visits. Please ask your dentist about what will work best for your state of health.

Q2: Is flossing necessary if I have brushed my teeth regularly?
A2: Brushing your teeth is great if done regularly as it gets rid of the bacteria feeding on food particles left in your mouth. But the tiny spaces between your teeth are unreachable by the toothbrush, so flossing helps to get rid of the bacteria. Flossing removes the plaque in which the bacteria live, so if you do not floss, the plaque will eventually harden into tartar. Only dentists can scrape off tartar as brushing the teeth can't remove it.

Q3: How do I prevent cavities from forming?
A3: Spend at least 2 minutes brushing your teeth to destroy the bacteria on your teeth. Do not brush too hard as only a little pressure is needed to remove plaque. Besides that, make sure to floss at least once a day to ensure an optimum hygiene level.

Q4: I do not have any gum problems. Should I scale and polish my gums and teeth?
A4: Many dentists or hygienists suggest scaling and polishing even if their patients are considered to be at low risk of developing gum disease. The idea is to "prevent" gum disease.

Q5: How long can sealant last?
A5: Sealant lasts between 6 to 8 years.
