What is Peptide Radionuclide Receptor Therapy (PRRT)?

PRRT is a molecular or radioisotope therapy used to treat specific type of cancer known as Neuroendocrine Tumors (NET).

In PRRT, peptide (cell-targeting protein) is mixed with small amount of radionuclide (radioactive material) to form a special type of radiopharmaceutical (radiopeptide). Radiopeptide is injected into the patient's bloodstream and binds with neuroendocrine tumor cells to deliver a high dose of radiation directly to the cancer cells.

What is Neuroendocrine Tumors (NET)?

NET usually starts producing when the DNA of specialized cells of the body's neuroendocrine system is damaged, causing the cells to change and grow out of control, forming a mass.

These specialized cells have traits of both hormone-producing endocrine and nerve cells. Hence, they help control many of the body's functions. NET can occur in any part of the body especially lung, gastrointestinal tract and pancreas.
