What is Knee and Thigh Surgery?

Whether you are suffering from sports-induced knee-joint injury or simply require knee correction due to aging, our affiliated clinic offers a variety of knee and thigh surgeries that can help improve your condition.

Total Knee Replacement Procedure

1. An incision is made across the front of your knee to gain access to the patella.
2. The patella is rotated to allow the viewing of the area that the surgery will be performed on.
3. After your bones are measured, precise cuts are made on the bone using special instruments. The damaged bone and cartilage from the end of the femur is cut away. The end of your femur is cut and resurfaced to fit the first part of the artificial knee, the femoral component.
4. The metal femoral component is reattached to the end of your femur (bone cement is used to seal it into place).
5. The tibia is resurfaced. Damaged bone and cartilage is removed from the top of the tibia. The tibia is shaped to fit the metal and plastic tibial components.
6. The bottom portion of the implant (called the tibial tray) is fitted to the tibia and secured into place using bone cement. A polyethylene insert is snapped in to sit between the tibial tray and the femoral component to act as a kind of buffer. In addition, this polyethylene insert provides support to your body as you bend and flex your knee.
7. In order to ensure that the polyethylene insert fits with the rest of the implant, your patella might need to be flattened and fitted with an additional plastic component. The patella is then returned to its normal position.
8. Your knee will be bent and flexed to ensure that the implant is working correctly and that the alignment, sizing and positioning are suitable.
9. The incision is closed with stitches or staples.

Arthroscopy of Knee Joint Procedure

1. A few incisions are made in your knee.
2. Sterile saline is pumped in to expand your knee to help the surgeon see inside your joint.
3. The arthroscope is inserted into one of the incisions, after which the insides of your knee joint are observed by the surgeon with the help of a camera.
4. After the problem locations in your knee have been identified, small tools are inserted through the incisions and into your knee joint to help correct your knee joint.
5. The saline is drained from your joint and incisions are closed.

FAQ

Q1: If I experience knee stiffness and inflammation, should I undergo total knee replacement?
A1: It is very important to exhaust all non-surgical options including medications, physical therapy and injections before moving on to surgery. It is recommended that you put off surgery for some time to use these conservative options. Once these options have failed, surgical intervention may be the next step and at that point, it will be important to discuss with an orthopedic surgeon what option is best for you as an individual.

Q2: Does your affiliated clinic offer minimally-invasive knee surgery?
A2: Our affiliated clinic offers both traditional and minimally-invasive knee surgeries. The method is decided upon consultation with a doctor and depends on your medical history, health status, age and expectations.

Q3: What can Arthroscopy of the knee joint correct?
A3: A torn meniscus, misaligned patella (kneecap), torn ligaments, torn and loose cartilage, knee bone fractures and a swollen synovium can be corrected by undergoing a knee joint arthroscopy. In addition, the Baker's Cyst can be removed by undergoing the procedure.

Q4: How long will my new knee joint last?
A4: According to statistics, there is a 98% chance of full joint functionality at 10 years post surgery and 94% chance that the joint will still be functioning well after 20 years.

Q5: How long after the surgery do I have to wait until I can resume my sports routine?
A5: In most cases, you may resume most of your normal activities in about 12 to 14 weeks after the surgery.
