1. An incision is made across the front of your knee to gain access to the patella.
2. The patella is rotated to allow the viewing of the area that the surgery will be performed on.
3. After your bones are measured, precise cuts are made on the bone using special instruments. The damaged bone and cartilage from the end of the femur is cut away. The end of your femur is cut and resurfaced to fit the first part of the artificial knee, the femoral component.
4. The metal femoral component is reattached to the end of your femur (bone cement is used to seal it into place).
5. The tibia is resurfaced. Damaged bone and cartilage is removed from the top of the tibia. The tibia is shaped to fit the metal and plastic tibial components.
6. The bottom portion of the implant (called the tibial tray) is fitted to the tibia and secured into place using bone cement. A polyethylene insert is snapped in to sit between the tibial tray and the femoral component to act as a kind of buffer. In addition, this polyethylene insert provides support to your body as you bend and flex your knee.
7. In order to ensure that the polyethylene insert fits with the rest of the implant, your patella might need to be flattened and fitted with an additional plastic component. The patella is then returned to its normal position.
8. Your knee will be bent and flexed to ensure that the implant is working correctly and that the alignment, sizing and positioning are suitable.
9. The incision is closed with stitches or staples.
1. A few incisions are made in your knee.
2. Sterile saline is pumped in to expand your knee to help the surgeon see inside your joint.
3. The arthroscope is inserted into one of the incisions, after which the insides of your knee joint are observed by the surgeon with the help of a camera.
4. After the problem locations in your knee have been identified, small tools are inserted through the incisions and into your knee joint to help correct your knee joint.
5. The saline is drained from your joint and incisions are closed.
