Short for Botulinum Toxin, Botox is a purified protein which is able to block overactive nerve impulses that trigger excessive muscle contractions. When injected into facial muscles, Botox helps to reduce all kinds of facial lines, including wrinkles. Botox can also help treat migraines/headaches and intense sweating. If you are bothered by the unsightly wrinkles on the skin, then it’s already a reasonable time to start Botox. It’s better to treat wrinkles early before trying to fix them when they are already more obvious. Wrinkles form due to repetitive folding of the skin. By injecting Botox, you can slow down the use of the muscles involved, which will prevent the wrinkles from developing any deeper.

Q1: How long will the effects of one Botox session last?

Q2: How can Botox help with migraines and headaches?
A2: Botox can be injected around the pain fibers that are involved in headaches. With Botox injection into specific points, the release of chemicals in pain transmission can be blocked, hence preventing headaches and pain.

Q3: How can Botox help with excessive sweating?
A3: When you receive Botox injections directly into the specific areas that commonly sweat, your overactive nerves that cause excessive sweating are essentially paralyzed. When the nerves can’t signal your sweat glands, you don’t sweat.

Q4: Will my face look 'frozen' after Botox?
A4: It all depends on where and how much Botox is injected. There are patients who wish for a 'frozen' look while others do not want that. In order to get your desired results, it's important to discuss your expectations with the doctor.

Q5: Will it hurt?
A5: Since very small needles are used, the injections are not painful. But this also depends on how sensitive you are to pain. The doctor may use a local anesthetic for your comfort. Some people may only need to ice the area before treatment.

Q6: What should I do after getting Botox injection?
A6: Do not massage or rub the treated area. Stay upright for the following 4 hours after the procedure and it is recommended to stay at an air-conditioned environment. Refrain from all activities that raise the body temperature for at least 24 hours after the procedure. This includes sauna, sports, sunbathing and other strenuous activities. Also avoid hot drinks and excessive alcohol.
